Thoothukudi Corporation has been taking a slew of measures to check spread of dengue. As part of the anti-dengue operations, steps are being taken to create more awareness of the vector-borne disease among the residents and ensure that households are free from mosquitoes, especially the dengue-causing Aedes.

Around 40 houses in Rajagopal Nagar First Street in ward 3 and Grace Colony in Cruzpuram in ward 20 had been identified with mosquito-breeding sources.

Notice instructing the households to clear such sources from their premises within 24 hours had been served under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939, City Health Officer Pradeep V. Krishnakumar told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

With the deployment of over 200 domestic breeding checkers, mosquito breeding sources were being checked at regular intervals.

If the households served with notice did not follow the instructions, necessary action would be initiated against them under Sections 44 (creating nuisance), 52 (general infectious disease), 83 to 88 (control of mosquito breeding sites) and 134 (penalty) of the Act.

If mosquito breeding sources including open water containers, refrigerator defrost trays, aquatic plant vases (money plants), open wells, open pots, open cement tubs, underground water sumps, barrels and overhead tanks had not been maintained properly and remedial measures were not taken within the 24-hour notice period, a penalty of ₹500 would be imposed on the residents.

A penalty of ₹2,000-₹5,000 would be imposed on defaulting commercial establishments like workshops, godowns or factories.

Anti-dengue operations would be intensified in the days to come, Mr. Krishnakumar added.
