Announcing with a sense of pride, State Law Minister C.V. Shanmugam said on Saturday that 89.6 per cent of court buildings in Tamil Nadu functioned from own premises or belonged to the government.
Showering encomiums on the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the Minister said that it was due to her commitment in public life, such projects were achievable in a record period that even in a small district such as Virudhunagar, 84 per cent of the courts functioned in own buildings.
Speaking after inaugurating new court buildings here constructed at a cost of ₹3.82 crore, he said that in the last five years, the State government had allotted ₹511.66 crore for over 200 projects in the judicial department, which included 43 new court buildings.
The government, under the leadership of Ms. Jayalalithaa, had also earmarked funds for setting up 20 family courts and 32 Mahila courts across the State.
“Only when the government provided infrastructure, the judiciary can appoint officers and deliver speedy justice,” he noted.
Minister for Information Rajendra Balaji said that the government would establish a Labour Court soon in Sivakasi.
In the presence of High Court Judges D. Mathivanan, P. Devadas and G. Jayachandran, the bhoomi puja was performed for the construction of combined court buildings in Sivakasi and Rajapalayam at a cost of ₹25.81 crore.
The Principal District Judge Sivakumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate Vasanthi, District Revenue Officer C. Muthukumaran, Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan and MLAs S.G. Subramanian and M. Chandraprabha, office-bearers and members from the advocate bar associations participated.
