Members of the National Reconstruction for Sustainable Livelihood Trust (NRSLT) marked the 78{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of the renowned organic farming scientist G. Nammazhvar by distributing Kadambavanam tree saplings here on Monday.

At an event organised at the Gandhi Memorial Museum, more than 350 saplings were distributed by M.P. Gurusamy, Secretary, Gandhi Memorial Museum, to nature enthusiasts and public who had come to take part in a workshop on terrace and kitchen farming techniques.

“While Madurai was once renowned for the Kadamba trees, they can hardly be found at present. That is why we wanted to distribute Kadamba saplings with the hope that there will once again be a lot of these trees, which have medicinal benefits, ” said M. Gnanasekar, a trustee of the NRSLT.

The NRSLT held a day-long workshop on effective ways to start and maintain organic terrace as well kitchen gardens in houses in which nearly 200 persons participated.

The members of the NRSLT said that they had been organising such training programmes at nominal cost every weekend but held a free workshop and demonstration to mark the birth anniversary.

“The benefits of growing and eating organic foods have become well known to everyone and we wanted to ensure that people knew the right procedures to follow and the organic methods propagated by Nammazhvar,” they said.

The participants were given organically grown vegetables and fruits sourced from a farm in Pattukottai where organic farming methods popularised by Nammazhvar are followed.
