Government employees and police personnel, who were deployed on poll duty in the two districts and cast their votes by post, overwhelmingly supported the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Congress combine if the analysis of postal ballots is any indication.
A total of 6,919 government staff and police personnel cast their valid postal votes in Ramanathapuram district and 59.49 per cent of them voted in favour the DMK-Congress candidates while 27.30 per cent of them for the AIADMK candidates in the four Assembly segments.
In Sivaganga district, a total of 6,489 government staff and police personnel registered their valid postal votes in four Assembly constituencies, and a whopping 82.22 per cent favoured DMK-Congress combine and 24.61 per cent the AIADMK.
U. Thisaiveeran, the DMK nominee who unsuccessfully contested from Paramakudi (Resrved) constituency, secured the maximum number of 1,460 postal votes, followed by S. Pandi, the Congress candidate who won from Mudukulathur (1,004), T. Thivakaran who lost in Tiruvadanai (914) and M.H. Jawahirullah, the DMK supported Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) leader (738), who failed to seek re-election from Ramanathapuram.
In Sivaganga, Congress candidate K.R. Ramasamy, who got elected from Karaikudi, polled the maximum number of 1,409 postal ballots, followed by DMK nominees Sathianathan (1,129), who lost in Sivaganga, Chithraselvi (1,000), who lost in Manamadurai (Res), and K.R. Periyakaruppan (797), who retained his Tirupattur seat.
