The Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA, R. Annadurai, has sought an enquiry into the Sunday's fire that broke out in the paediatric ward at the Government Rajaji Hospital, where electrical wiring had been taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crore only two months back.

After inspecting the paediatric ward, Mr. Annadurai said that it was only two months back the electrical wiring was renovated at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crore. “It is said that the fire was caused by short-circuit. Is it not the responsibility of the officials concerned to put safety gadgets in place for the wiring to withstand high voltage?” he said.

Stating that several electrical appliances stocked in the first floor were gutted, Mr. Annadurai wanted a Government probe into the incident to find out the real cause of the fire.

“How can such an incident happen in a Government hospital? Fortunately, no one was injured. If there was any foul-play, the people behind it should be punished,” he added.

Mr. Annadurai sought Collector Anshul Mishra's intervention in setting things right at the paediatric ward so that the ward becomes functional within a week. All the electrical wiring should be replaced, three air-conditioned units should be fixed and fresh coating of paint should be done, besides replacing the gutted beds, he added.
