Staff members from the Madurai Kamaraj University constituent colleges in Tirumangalam and Aruppukottai have complained that they have not been paid their salaries for the past two months.

While salaries are disbursed by the MKU for the other four constituent colleges, staff working in Tirumangalam and Aruppukottai colleges allege that the university has not taken steps to release their salaries despite repeated pleas. The two colleges, similar to the other constituent colleges, have no permanent staff. There are 24 teachers working on a consolidated pay in the colleges in Tirumangalam and Aruppukottai while another 17 teachers are paid on hourly basis.

A. Alaguselvam, working in the Aruppukkottai college, said that the university administration had recently demanded the colleges to submit worksheets. “Worksheets were already being submitted for those working on hourly basis to calculate their salary, as it is needed for those getting consolidated pay,” he said.

Fearing that the worksheets will be used later to cut back even the paltry salary being paid to them, Mr. Alaguselvam said that the two colleges had not submitted the worksheets. “The university is now citing that as a reason for delay in disbursing the salary,” he said.

In the meeting of MKU Constituent College Teachers Association (MUCCTA) held here on Saturday, a resolution was passed urging the university administration to release the pending salaries immediately and to stop demanding worksheets.

Resolutions were also passed condemning alleged irregularities in the admission process followed in constituent colleges.

When contacted, a senior MKU official said that the university had demanded worksheets for effective monitoring of the colleges. “There were also certain administrative delays in releasing the salaries, which are being sorted out,” he said.
