Scholarships worth Rs. 38 lakh constituted by Velammal Educational Trust (VET) for 2016-17 were awarded to 51 students from the Velammal group of schools in Madurai region by C. Sylendra Babu, Additional Director General of Police (Coastal Security Group), here on Saturday.

The scholarships, named ‘Velammal Veeramakali Matric Scholarships 2016-17’, included Rs 1 lakh for eight students who scored more than 1180 marks in Plus Two examination this year.

Another 43 students studying in the nine Velammal schools in Madurai region were awarded Rs. 30 lakh worth scholarships in the form of full fee waiver.

Chairman of Velammal Group M.V. Muthuramalingam said that the scholarships were intended to encourage students to focus on excellence from a young age. Stating that the total estimate for the scholarship was Rs. 3.6 Crore, Mr. Muthuramalingam said that 540 students from nine schools in Madurai region, which includes Madurai, Theni, Sivaganga and Karur, would benefit every year from the scholarships.

He said that the group decided to award scholarships in Madurai region instead of other regions where its institutions were located as many students from here hailed from poor economic background.

V. Pugalagiri, Chairman and Managing Director of Vadamalayan Hospitals, and Ganesh Natarajan, vice-president of VET for institutions in Madurai, were also present at the function.
