Family members of a 23-year-old woman and cadre of Social Democratic Party of India gheraoed the sterilisation clinic run by Family Planning Association of India here on Monday, alleging medical negligence in the death of the woman during tubectomy procedure.

B. Roshan Balina, a resident of Sungam Pallivasal Street, who had given birth to a boy only three days ago, got herself admitted to the clinic on Monday morning for the procedure. However, within a few hours after the procedure began, she was allegedly referred to Government Rajaji Hospital, where the doctors declared that she was brought dead. Quoting the version of family members, M. Jaffar Sultan, district president of SDPI, said that the girl was hale and hearty when she went to the clinic. “The couple already have two girl children. Three days ago, she gave birth to a boy in a private hospital. Since they were informed that family planning procedure was done free of cost at FPAI, the couple, who hail from a humble economic background, chose to get the procedure performed there,” he said.

He alleged that doctors and other officials at FPAI clinic failed to provide any convincing explanation regarding Ms. Roshan’s death. The protesters left the venue after the police assured them that post mortem would be videographed to ensure transparency and the family’s demand for compensation would be considered. FPAI authorities could not be reached immediately for comment.
