A mango trader, who sustained grievous injuries in an attack by a four-member gang at Mela Ilanji near Courtallam on Wednesday evening, died in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Thursday.

Police said S. Velsamy (57), a mango trader from Mela Ilanji under Courtallam police station limits was taking the fruits purchased at Sambavar Vadakarai in an auto on Wednesday evening. When he reached Savukku Corner, S. Chinna Esakki, K. Nagaraj, Kannan and another person were standing on the road and blocked the traffic.

When Velsamy objected, Chinna Esakki and his friends attacked him with an iron rod, in which he sustained serious injuries on the head and was admitted to the Tenkasi Government Hospital. He was then referred to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for further treatment, where he died on Thursday morning.

When Chinna Esakki went to Tenkasi Government Hospital immediately after the attack, saying that he had sustained injuries as Velsamy allegedly attacked him, an unidentified relative of Velsamy stabbed him. However, Chinna Esakki escaped with minor injuries.
