Tension gripped the Office of the Superintendent of Police here on Monday when a youth attempted self-immolation in front of it demanding police action to retrieve his wife.

Police thwarted his attempt and arrested Manigandan (27) of Margaiyankottai village.

Manigandan told the police that he had married Padmasuruthi (22) five months ago. But his wife's relatives had been troubling us from day one. They took my wife to their village last month. She was pregnant at that time. When I went to her house to bring her back, the relatives did not allow me to meet her and shattered all my efforts to bring her back. The police too did not take any action on a complaint lodged by me. So I planned to commit suicide, he added.

The State’s health helpline 104 provides anti-suicide counselling and Chennai-based Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline is 044-24640050.
