Madurai students bag medals

Bethshan Special School students have struck gold and silver in the recently held State-level games for the differently abled at Coimbatore under the Special Olympics Bharat programme of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Scheme of Sports and Games for the Disabled.

The students Arun, Mukesh, Gowtham and Muthukumar bagged gold and silver medals in various events. In the under-11, 100 metres sprint, Mukesh and Arun won gold and silver medals respectively. Mukesh also bagged silver in the shot put throw.

Muthukumar bagged gold and silver in the 100 metres sprint and long jump events in the under-16 category.

In the under-21 category, Gowtham bagged gold medals in 100 metres and shot put throw. Arun and Mukesh also bagged gold in the other multiple track and field events.

This effort by the Ministry has brought together all the differently abled persons to participate, at district, state and national level through the programme called Special Olympics-Bharat.

Earlier, sports competitions were held by different organisations.

For example, Paralympics Committee used to conduct for visually challenged and physically handicapped, All India Sports Council for the Deaf and Special Olympics for mentally challenged.

Through Special Olympics-Bharat, in every State and all the districts across the country, competitions at various levels were being organised and training is also given to special educators and parents.
