Help police in preventing crimes: Commissioner

Says residents must be aware of challenges faced by the police

September 01, 2014 10:43 am | Updated 10:43 am IST - MADURAI:

In a growing city such as Madurai, the police alone could not deliver goods all the time. The residents must be aware of the challenges the police faced and help them in keeping peace in the society, said Inspector General and Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur.

Addressing students of Madurai Institute of Social Sciences (MISS) on ‘Awareness of crime prevention’ organised by the Indian Society of Criminology (ISC)- Madurai chapter here recently, Mr. Mathur said the role of youth in crime prevention was important.

Unlike developed nations, the police-public ratio in India was negligible. Hence, the role of residents was imperative in countering challenges posed by criminals and law offenders. “Every resident must play a role to ensure peace in the society by not giving room for criminals to commit their acts. By following some simple practices, it can be achieved,” he said and listed them.

“Avoid striking up conversation with strangers in a public place, especially when you are carrying cash or valuables; do not drink and drive as it may end up in a fatal accident; and whether you are rich or poor, never encourage unethical practices,” Mr. Mathur said.

“These are just a few tips for crime prevention. In the long run, the police can ensure strict maintenance of law and order,” he said.

Not enough lockers

“A big city like Madurai has only around 2,000 safety lockers in banks. Since they are not adequate to keep valuables of a large number of people, are those who do not have a locker take enough precautions to keep them safe by following good practices,” he wondered.

While leaving home, it must be ensured that the valuables were kept safely. “By not giving any opportunity to criminals, many a crime can be prevented,” Mr. Mathur said.

“I see youth riding two-wheelers recklessly at high speed on narrow roads. But, by following traffic rules, accidents can be brought down,” he said.

On job racket, he said, “At least 10 youths turn up with petitions every month, saying they were duped by racketeers after giving promise of getting them a good job. Be on your guard against fraudsters,” he said.

ISC (Madurai chapter) president Vijayarajan and MISS founder D.V.P. Raja were present.
