A low-intensity crude bomb exploded beneath an empty truck parked on the southern banks of the Vaigai river here between Albert Victor bridge and New Kalpalam bridge late on Friday night.

Police sources said that there was no significant damage to the vehicle and no one was hurt. They added that that it was customary for the truck’s owner to park the vehicle at the blast spot during night time.

Personnel from Madurai City police, including senior officials and a team from Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, inspected the spot and conducted inquiries. Three small batteries and some burnt jute were recovered from the site. Police sources said that the blast was similar to that of a few other low-intensity explosions at different places in the city over the last few years.

Previous incident

The last incident was on September 30, 2015, also on the southern bank of Vaigai river, when two such low intensity bombs went off in the night in quick succession in two vacant Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses parked there. At least six people were arrested then, although all are now out on bail, police sources said.

In relation to Friday’s incident, the police have registered a case based on a complaint received from J. Vedanayagam Selvakumar, an employee of the lorry service company.
