Residents of Kovilangulam panchayat in Chellampatti panchayat union submitted a petition at the Collectorate here on Monday alleging that they were manhandled by police during a protest in their village.

The residents said they had been appealing to councillors and officials in their area for installation of a proper drainage system. “There are more than 100 families living in Kovilangulam and we have submitted numerous petitions seeking the facility,” they said.

In their petition, the protestors claimed that though funds had been allotted long back for establishing the drainage system and laying cement roads, they had not been utilised properly.

“We asked for construction of a drainage line before laying of cement roads, but our plea was not considered. On December 18, works began to lay cement roads and when a few of us protested against it, we were manhandled by the police,” they alleged.

No proper planning

The residents further said the ongoing works on cement roads were not being carried out with proper planning and the roads would get damaged soon.
