One gored to death, 10 injured in jallikattu

One person was gored to death and 10 others sustained injuries at the jallikattu in Mukkampatti village near Melur here on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as 23-year-old M. Selvendiran from A. Vellalapatti. Officials said that Selvendiran, who was near waiting outside the jallikattu arena, was gored by a bull near the exit point. He died while being rushed to hospital, sources said.

According to a senior revenue official from Melur, the injuries of the 10 people were not of grievous nature.

The district administration made routine arrangements for the event.Players were allowed to enter in batches inside the arena.

A total of 900 bulls had registered for the event, of which 562 were brought to the venue. The teams from Animal Husbandry department rejected 30 of them for being unfit while the remaining 532 bulls took part in the event.

Similarly, of the 500 bull tamers registered for the event, 388 turned up for the event. A total of 378 were allowed to play while the remaining 10 were deemed unfit to participate.
