The Civil Aviation Ministry recently approved Madurai-Colombo-Madurai flight to be operated by the Spicejet.
This was informed by Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh to Virudhunagar MP Manicka Tagore on Wednesday when the latter called on him.
The notification for setting up a “customs desk” at the Madurai airport was cleared recently by the Finance Ministry, Mr. Tagore told The Hindu .
With this Tamil Nadu will have the third airport to have international flight operations.
Presently the Spicejet, Air India, Jet Airways are operating flights from Madurai to Delhi, Mumbai (both via. Chennai), Chennai and Hyderabad and Kingfisher Airlines was operating to Bangalore till a few weeks ago.
The Rs.129 crore 1.89 lakh sq.ft. new integrated airport terminal in the temple town was inaugurated on September 12, 2010.
The airport has been in operation since 1956.
