Even as the case of honour killing of a girl in Usilampatti was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Inspector General of Police (South Zone) has been conducting enquiry on the conduct of the police personnel. Police sources said that the High Court had ordered the enquiry based on the allegation of Dilip Kumar, a Scheduled Caste youth, who had eloped with the deceased, V. Vimala Devi, a caste Hindu, on the role of the police investigating into the death.
South Zone IGP Abhay Kumar Singh had summoned 10 police personnel and officials, mostly from Usilampatti Town and Taluk police stations. He had also summoned two Deputy Superintendents of Police, Kanthasoruban (Samayanallur) and Kumaravel (Prohibition Enforcement Wing), Inspectors of Police Sugumar (Chekkanoorani) and Esther (Sholavandan), Woman Sub-Inspectors of Police, Rani (Usilampatti Town) and Ananthi (Batlagundu, Dindigul district).
Dilip Kumar had alleged that the enquiry of the police into the death of Vimala Devi whose body was cremated stealthily by her parents on the same night of October 2, 2014, was only on the lines of suicide and not of a murder.
The deceased had eloped with the youth, who was working as a driver in their house, following which the Usilampatti police had brought them from Kerala. Later, the girl’s marriage with another youth, Sathish Kumar, a caste-Hindu, was arranged by the parents. A few days before the marriage, Vimala Devi took the bridegroom to Batlagundu on the premise of buying clothes. However, she had alerted Dilip Kumar about her visit.
When Dilip Kumar came to the garment shop, Vimala Devi tried to go with him, much to the opposition of Sathish Kumar. After a wordy altercation, the Batlagundu police took the girl to a Government Women’s Home at Oomachikulam. Later, the Woman Sub-Inspector of Police, Ananthi, (Batlagundu) had left the girl with her parents.
Superintendent of Police Vijayendra Bidari recommended action against Ananthi for her failure to register a FIR. Instead, she had only booked it in the community service register.
