The Rameswaram – Chennai express, scheduled to leave Rameswaram at 5 p.m. was held up at Rameswaram and the Madurai – Rameswaram passenger was terminated at Mandapam due to high velocity winds in Pamban, Mandapam and adjoining areas on Tuesday.

Railway officials detained the train as the wind was blowing at the speed of more than 58 km per hour and the anemometer at both ends of the bridge automatically turned the signal red, officials said.

The Rameswaram – Chennai Sethu Superfast express, scheduled to leave Rameswaram at 8.15 p.m. was also held up, officials said. This train would also suffer delay as it would get signal to depart only after the Chennai express departs from the station.

In a pre-emptive move, the officials terminated the Madurai – Rameswaram passenger train (56721) at Mandapam after it reached the station in the afternoon. It left Mandapam as train no. 56726 for Madurai at 6 30 p.m. Officials at Mandapam station said the automatic signals at the Pamban bridge would turn green only when the wind velocity was less than 58 km per hour.
