HC seeks status report on probe into girl’s murder

August 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:13 am IST - Madurai:

The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday directed Kannivadi police in Dindigul district to file a status report on the investigation done by them into the death of a 17-year-old Scheduled Caste girl, suspected to have been gang raped before the perpetrators severed her head and threw the body into the bushes on the foothills of Panrimalai in May.

Justice S. Vimala passed the order on a petition filed by the girl’s father seeking a Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) probe into her murder, besides initiating appropriate action against a group of local police officials for failing to perform their duty as prescribed under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Petitioner’s counsel, I. Robert Chandrakumar, pointed out that the girl had developed an intimacy with a Caste Hindu youth in their village and eloped with him on May 2. Though the petitioner suspected the involvement of the youngster and lodged a complaint with the police, they allegedly made him run from pillar to post till her body was found on May 6.

CB-CID probe sought

Accusing the police of not conducting the investigation in the right direction, he urged the court to transfer the probe to the CB-CID. But government counsel told the court that a Deputy Superintendent of Police had been appointed to investigate the murder.
