Group clash leads to tension in Cumbum

Two police officers injured, two vehicles damaged

Tension gripped the town owing to a clash between two sections here on Thursday night.

Two police officers were injured and two vehicles including a police vehicle were damaged in the stone throwing incident.

Cases were filed against 35 persons and 17 from both sides were arrested in this connection.

The Armed Police personnel were deployed at the spot to bring the situation under control. They also took out a march in the town this morning.

The police said that youth near Kaatu Pallivasal Road area in the town reportedly teased women residing in the area.

They lodged a complaint with the Cumbum police station demanding action against persons who teased the women.

When the police Inspector Ulaganathan, along with two police constables went to the spot for an inquiry, two sections of people quarrelled with each other and it snowballed into a group clash.

Unruly mobs threw stones at each other.

Mr. Ulaganathan received head injuries. He was admitted to Cumbum Government Hospital for treatment.

A police vehicle and a two wheeler were damaged.

Superintendent of Police M. Baskaran along with a strong police force brought the situation under control.

Additional force from Dindigul was also mobilised to Cumbum.

Dindigul Additional Superintendent of Police M. Srinivasan along with AR police too camped in the town to maintain law and order. They took out a march in the area.

In support of a section of people, Muslims in Periyakulam too picketed Theni-Kumuli Highway around 1.30 a.m. on Friday demanding action against rival gang members.

After a negotiation, they withdrew the agitation. Traffic was disrupted for sometime.

Peace meeting

Meanwhile, revenue officials and the police have planned to conduct a peace meeting in Cumbum to settle the issue amicably.

Police sources said that prior enmity between two sections of people had burst out into group clash on that day.
