But for a few negligible number, the overall percentage of attendance of doctors is “on time”, said Government Rajaji Hospital Medical Superintendent S.M. Sivakumar here on Monday.
Surprise visit
Last week, Collector U. Sagayam made a surprise visit to the hospital in the night and found the house was not in order in a couple of wards.
He was inquiring with patients at the casualty ward and with duty doctors and para-medical staff about the facilities being provided at the hospital.
Dr. Sivakumar said that a total of 1,500 persons including chief doctors, post-graduate medical students and house surgeons worked in the hospital.
Memos issued
During his rounds in the hospital, he found that 23 doctors were not present at work and hence issued memos seeking explanation.
The doctors attending at the out-patient wards would have to report for work at 7.30 a.m. and those at the in-patient wards would have to be present by 9 a.m.
After the inspection, doctors and para-medical staff have been instructed to be present on time for duty.
Warning
Any negligence would be seriously viewed, Dr. Sivakumar said. Out of the vast number of doctors, about five civil surgeons had signed “late attendance” on Monday.
Dr. Sivakumar said that a proposal to Medical Education Director had been sent seeking budgetary allocation for the newly built GRH–Annexe at the Anna Bus Stand Complex, which would treat trauma cases of all kinds.
The new building, which was completed a few months ago, was inaugurated before the general election by Union Minister M.K. Alagiri.
Funding not yet
However the State government had to earmark funds in the budget, he said.
