A 11-year-old girl Jayabharathi of Cumbum was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital here after she tested ‘positive' for dengue on Friday.
Totally nine dengue patients are presently undergoing treatment in the GRH and doctors are on alert to provide effective treatment to them and prevent any casualty.
On Thursday, an eight-month-old girl baby of Sellur area in the city died of dengue fever making it the first casualty in Madurai district for this vector borne disease.
A. Pragadeswaran, Resident Medical Officer, GRH, said that totally 21 patients were given treatment for dengue fever in the hospital and some of them were discharged.
Two women, Maryal (53) from Kamudhi and Pechiammal (23) of Tirunelveli district have been admitted to the GRH after they tested dengue positive.
The RMO informed that anti-larval measures were taken in the hospital premises for mosquito control and fogging too was carried out by the Corporation staff. Special focus was given to prevent water stagnation in GRH, he added.
As dengue outbreak spreads in southern districts, the Indian Public Health Association's Tamil Nadu Branch has made an appeal to the State government to create separately a ‘centre for disease control' in the State.
This centre, it said, must function on the lines of National Centre for Disease Control and Centre for Disease Control at the global level.
S. Elango, former Director of Public Health and currently State president of the association, said all unwanted/unused water containers must be removed from your houses and water containers should be cleared on a regular basis.
