The sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices was a direct attack on the people of the country by BJP-led government at the Centre, said veteran leader of Communist Party of India D. Pandian here on Wednesday.

Speaking at a demonstration organised by the party against the fuel price hike, he said that apart from the unprecedented level of rise in the price of petrol to more than ₹ 80, LPG cylinders have become unaffordable to most people in lower-income groups due to significant increase in the price.

He said that all this was happening when the price of crude oil has gone down sharply in the international market. “By deregulating the price of fuel, the government has helped big corporates to make huge profits,” he said.

He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has miserably failed to deliver on the promises he made and has instead driven country’s economy to an alarming state through measures like demonetisation.
