When ministers and other dignitaries want to have ‘local grub,’ they never go in search of popular eateries but bring the food through their local contacts and relish it in the comfort of their room.

But Madurai Central MLA PTRP Thiagarajan had a better thing in mind.

To give a real feel of his beloved city, he hosted a dinner for his friend and Deputy Education Minister for Malaysia P. Kamalanathan and Consul General Ahmad Fajarazam bin Abdul Jalil at a rustic name board-less eatery at Alagaradi in Madurai on Saturday.

Mr. Thiagarajan said the Dravidan Unavagam was the favourite haunt for him and his friends during his Vikaasa school days.

“Those days this eatery was functioning very near our school. I spent some good times at this joint with my friends. But this area has changed a lot. With a huge workforce, the Madura Coats vicinity used to be busy then. When I heard that Dravida Unavagam was functioning in another place nearby, I thought of introducing it to my friends from Malaysia,” he said.

Mr. Kamalanathan said the food and the place reminded him of Kuala Lumpur and its roadside eateries. “It is fiery hot there too. But the non-vegetarian fare here is awesome,” he said.

No match to taste

The Malaysian Consul General nodded: I’ve eaten in roadside stalls in Chennai. But nothing comes near this shop in taste,” he said.
