Farmers’ clubs were inaugurated for the agriculturalists at Paraipatti and Devaseri in Madurai district on Tuesday as part of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)’s farmer-friendly initiatives.
The club formed by the primary agriculture cooperative credit societies (PACS) in the co-operative sector in Alanganallur block club consists of 20 farmers from each village.
An orientation programme was conducted to the members of the club in which the advantages of grouping themselves to address their common needs were explained.
R. Shankar Narayan, Assistant General Manager of NABARD said the farmers should update themselves on the latest technologies, inter-cropping and select crops for their fields carefully.
The farmers’ clubs should be used as the medium for change for the betterment of the agriculturalists, he added.
“Serious efforts will be launched to promote High Density Plantations like Mango and Guava in association with the Horticulture Department using the latest technologies such as drip irrigation and polythene mulching in the fertile Alanganallur belt”, he said.
V. Mareeswaran, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, insisted that the farmers should take advantage of the various opportunities to equip themselves about the latest available technology.
