Eviction drive in fruit market

October 02, 2013 10:10 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:51 pm IST - MADURAI:

All unauthorised vendors selling fruits in the wholesale and retail markets situated along North Masi Street, Yanaikkal and other pockets here were evicted on Tuesday.

A team led by Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal ordered the removal of over 50 unauthorised vendors.

During the drive, which went on for over three hours, the authorities also removed tricycles, carts and other vehicles parked haphazardly.

Chief Town Planning Officer Rakkappan said only licensed vendors were permitted to run shops in the allotted spaces.

Those without licences were evicted, and the unauthorised vendors warned of legal action.

Following complaints from the general public that the pedestrian pathway on these stretches was encroached upon by wayside shopkeepers, the drive was carried out, officials said.
