Erring transport bus operators and motorists were fined to the tune of Rs. 62,700 during a surprise check conducted by the Transport Department officials on New Natham Road here on Thursday.
According to Regional Transport Officer (North) N. Ravichandran, the team checked the motorists for driving licence, overloading, over-speeding and other violations. Seven buses which were transporting school children were fined to the tune of Rs. 10,900 for various Motor Vehicle Act violations. Twenty other vehicles were found to have not complied with pollution certification norm, and drivers were not wearing uniform.
A two-wheeler rider was caught and fined Rs. 600 for riding with two persons in the pillion and for not having driving licence. Two autorickshaws were fined for overloading, and one among them was impounded, he added.
