An electrical engineer working in a mini-power house at Gudalur on contract basis was electrocuted while he was engaged in a trial run of the plant at Lower Camp on Thursday.

The deceased was A. Thanga Murugan (27) of Goundenpatti in Nilakottai block in Dindigul district. Workers rushed him to Cumbum Government Hospital, but he died on the way.

Post-mortem would be conducted on Friday, said doctors. Lower camp police have registered a case.

Thanga Murugan was the site engineer of the third mini-power plant at Vettukadu, which was commissioned with private participation. After commissioning turbines, a trial run was conducted in the morning. Thanga Murugan was electrocuted while he was making readings.

This was the second fatal accident in the power plant within a year. Prabhu of Gudalur, a worker, was electrocuted in January 2013, according to power plant workers. The government had sanctioned four mini-power plants at Lower Camp to generate hydel power.

Construction of two mini-power plants at Koovanuthu and Kanchi Madam was over and they started generating power. Each plant has two power turbines, generating two megawatt of power each.
