Over 300 roadside mobile vendors and hoardings, which obstructed pedestrian movement in the busy pockets around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, were evicted on Saturday.

A large posse of officials from the Corporation led by Chief Town Planning Officer Rakkappan, Assistant Commissioner Devadas and others supervised the removal of the unauthorised advertisement hoardings along the East Masi Street, Swami Sannidhi Street, Yanaikal, Simakkal, Vakkil New Street and other stretches.

Fruit shops, idli shops and flower vendors, who had occupied the pedestrian pathway in these pockets, were removed.

The Corporation staff picked up the seized goods and ensured that there was no untoward incident. Police were also present during the eviction drive.

Since Monday, the revenue and Corporation staff members in different teams have been evicting unauthorised hoardings and boards in the city limits and peripheries.

In all, over 3000 such unauthorised boards, including those put up on public places, were removed.

The Collector Anshul Mishra had appealed to the business establishments and shopkeepers to cooperate with the officials and not to obstruct them. He urged them to keep the city clean and free from encroachments.
