All unapproved outlets at the flower market in Mattuthavani were evicted in a drive conducted by Corporation officials on Thursday.
The officials said that following complaints that many flower vendors had encroached space in the market, Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri had ordered for the eviction drive. A team comprising CTPO I. Renganathan assisted by two assistant engineers and workers evicted all the unapproved outlets. The sellers’ paraphernalia were cleared using earthmovers and cleared in three trucks. The operation, which started at 10 a.m. went on for about four hours. To ensure that there was no resistance from the vendors, a posse of police personnel was deployed.
The officials said that seven shops, measuring 6x8, were the only approved outlets given to vendors in the flower market by the Corporation. Hence, all other shops set up in the market were removed.
The eviction drive would be carried out periodically in the future and habitual offenders taken to task, the officials added.
