The Madurai Corporation evicted concrete structures and sheds on a 400-metre stretch.

A team of officers led by Commissioner R. Nanthagopal and Deputy Commissioner (in charge) A. Devadas supervised the exercise during which 60 shops, including some concrete structures and thatched sheds, were removed on a 400- metre stretch.

After the drive, the spot looked broad and clean.

During a recent interaction with the public, Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa had promised to remove encroachments periodically and that there would not be any political interference.

The officials would be given a free hand in public interest, he said and urged residents to inform about encroachments. Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police Myil Vaganan, who was present at the meeting, had suggested removal of encroachments on the Ring Road since they were proving to be a hindrance to motorists.
