A group of advocates has lodged a complaint with the city police over an emerald lingam (phallic object as a symbol of Lord Shiva) which it claims is in the custody of the Madurai Corporation.
The advocates, under the banner of the Inter-religious Advocates Association, led by its president S.Muthukumar, on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Tallakulam police to retrieve the priceless artefact which is reportedly in the possession of the Corporation.
Mr.Muthukumar said the lingam was deposited in the Corporation treasury when the chathiram building was taken over for demolition and reconstruction in early 2000.
The Corporation authorities had promised to restore the lingam to its original place after completing the renovation. However, the Corporation officials did not reply to the questions raised through the Right to Information Act with regard to the location of the lingam.
When asked about the issue, Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa said, “If I get any complaint, I will act upon it.”
Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal was not available for comment.
