June 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 04:58 pm IST - KODAIKANAL:

Pichai Ammal (52) was collecting firewood in the reserve forests of Pechiparai, on Monday, when an elephant attacked her. She died on the spot. The elephant is said to have been in this area for quite some time.

Residents of Ganesapuram, Pechiparai and Anju Veedu staged a protest at the Perumal Malai junction condemning “inaction” of forest officials. They refused to take the body from the Government Hospital. Traffic was disrupted for two hours.

Vehicles going to Palani, Theni, Madurai and Dindigul from Kodaikanal were stranded on Kodaikanal-Batlagundu and Palani-Kodaikanal ghat roads.

Later, police and forest officials assured the villagers that steps would be taken to erect solar fences near villages.
