The Kerala government should not create panic or mislead people about the Mullaperiyar dam row, said Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary K. Anbazhagan here on Wednesday.

He was here to preside over the human chain observed in the city and suburban parts stretching up to Usilampatti in the district to draw the attention of the Central government and to immediately intervene in the sensitive issue and solve the imbroglio.

Mr. Anbazhagan briefly told reporters at Tallakulam junction on Alagarkoil Road that the constitution bench of the Supreme Court had categorically spelt out its stand on the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam on Tuesday. At least from now onwards, the governments in power should understand and conduct themselves in such a manner that the issue did not flare up.

“Today, even small hamlets in Theni district are experiencing uneasy calm for the last eight to 10 days…They don't know what is up for tomorrow. The people are caught in a quagmire and are worried about their future. What will happen if water becomes scarce for drinking and irrigation activities, when a majority of the belt depends on agriculture,” he asked.

The governments should ensure that the country remained united like in the past and rights of the citizens were duly enjoyed as per the Constitution. Leaders, including Pon. Muthuramalingam, former Minister; former Mayors P. Kulandaivelu and S. Ramachandran; former MLAs G. Thalapathi and S. Velusami, advocate Mohankumar, P. M. Mannan, P. Moorthy, and councillor Arunkumar participated in the human chain.

The DMK cadres shouted slogans against the Kerala government not to attempt to stop water to Tamil Nadu.
