Doctors’ body demands action against nurse

March 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - MADURAI:

Doctors at primary health centres would go on a dharna after their duty hours on Friday.

After the general body meeting of Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association here on Wednesday, its State president K. Senthil said the decision was made as no action was taken against a village health nurse (VHN) at a primary health centre in Tiruvarur who was allegedly involved in a verbal altercation with a doctor and had also assaulted a clerk there.

“She claimed that the clerk had misbehaved with her which was not the case. However, she and a few other VHNs in the area, staged a road roko following which the clerk was arrested. A complaint had been filed with the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) with audio recordings as evidence of the incident but no appropriate action was taken against her,” he said.

The doctors said they condemned the high-handedness and non-cooperation of a few VHNs which was prevalent across districts and demanded that stern action should be taken against the village health nurse from Tiruvarur which would instil a sense of discipline and regard for the system among them.

“We are sporting black badges for the next three days and will boycott non-emergency meetings organised by the district administration and government. If no action is taken based on the complaint, we will convene a general body meeting on Saturday and decide how to proceed with our protests,” they said.
