August 18, 2016 07:38 am | Updated November 17, 2021 04:28 am IST - Ramanathapuram:

A group of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadres led by District secretary S. P. Diwakaran burnt the effigy of Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal, protesting against the suspension of DMK MLAs in the State Assembly.

About 15 to 20 volunteers came in two cars with the effigy and burnt it at the new bus stand here, taking the police by surprise. Before police could reach the spot, they fled the scene, police added.

Mr. Diwakaran said they burnt the effigy of the Speaker to register their protest against his action, directing the marshals to bundle out leader of the opposition M. K. Stalin and en masse suspending DMK MLAs for a week. They staged the protest demanding that the Speaker conducted the proceedings in an impartial manner, he said.
