Distribution of free textbooks for students commenced here on Thursday.
The free books for students of government and government aided schools were being distributed through the Department of Posts in association with Department of Education.
Previously, heads of schools concerned had to collect the books from the Department of Education. But to dispatch books to schools concerned quickly and in time, the drive was being carried out.
G. Manavala Ramanujam, Chief Education Officer, said a total of 7, 75, 154 books had been earmarked for the district.
As many as 121 higher secondary schools and 65 high schools in the district would receive the books.
As far as elementary level schools were concerned, a total of 1, 348 schools would receive 4,93, 439 text books.
A similar drive was taken up in Kovilpatti education district a couple of days ago.
The Postal Department personnel dispatched books to 23 schools in various parts of Tuticorin on Thursday.
T. Veluchamy, Superintendent, Department of Posts, Tuticorin Division, was present at Thangammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School here where a programme was organised in this connection.
