Government hospital at Rajapalayam has got a new dialysis unit at a cost of ₹7.5 lakh. Chairman of Ramco Group P.R. Venketrama Raja inaugurated the new facility here on Wednesday.

The new facility would cater to the patients with renal problems for dialysis free of cost, the Chief Medical Officer of the GH, N. Babuji, said. The patients had to go all the way to the district headquarters hospital at Virudhunagar for dialysis or spend a few thousands at private hospitals.

“We will charge only ₹500 towards maintenance cost and that too would be borne under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme,” Dr. Babuji said.

This is the first time a taluk hospital had got a dialysis unit, he added. “Three patients can undergo dialysis each day,” he added.

With no nephrologist available in the GH, two senior doctors of General Medicine have been trained to use the dialysis unit. Besides, a dialysis technician has been outsourced. The hospital is likely to get one more dialysis unit very soon.

Rajapalayam MLA Thangapandian inaugurated a new reverse osmosis water plant. Treated water was required for dialysis.

Besides, he also formally inaugurated a cell counter equipment that would be helpful to diagnose dengue. The ₹4.5-lakh equipment was bought from the MLA Constituency Development Fund.

Joint Director (Rural and Health Services) R. Manoharan was present.
