A 12-storey apartment complex under construction in Zone 2 of Madurai Corporation was sealed on Thursday after stagnant water at the site was found to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes spreading dengue.

As part of the corporation’s efforts to intensify preventive measures against the spread of dengue, a team of officials led by Commissioner C. Kathiravan undertook a series of inspections.

When the construction site of the apartment complex at Moondrumavadi was inspected, it was found that stagnant water on the premises had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Due to the unhygienic condition and the threat it posed to residents, the site was sealed following orders of the Commissioner.

“Water receptacles like open cement tanks and large vessels should be properly covered. While we are inspecting breeding sources, garbage or plastic should not be allowed to accumulate in a place as it contributes to breeding,” Mr. Kathiravan said.

A five-storey building under construction at Surveyor Colony was also sealed following an inspection which revealed that the water containers at the site were badly maintained and had larvae breeding in them.

Corporation officials said that a godown in West Anuppanadi, where waste plastic was stored in an unhygienic environment, was sealed.

The owners of a house under construction at Ahimsapuram in Sellur were fined on Thursday after it was found that an uncovered tank had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The corporation has formed teams of officials and health inspectors to be in charge of 75 houses in every street. According to Mr. Kathiravan, they will check water storage points and tanks and ensure that there is no stagnant water on roads. The teams will also facilitate speedy garbage clearance.

Dengue awareness programmes are conducted across wards and fogging is being carried out as a preventive measure.
