Counselling for admission to various courses offered by Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women in the city commenced on Monday.

According to S. Sethurakayee, Principal (in-charge) of the college, counselling for candidates under special quota was conducted on Monday, which will be followed by counselling for general candidates till June 23.

The college provides three per cent reservation for physically challenged candidates, three per cent for candidates under sports quota and six per cent for children of ex-servicemen.

“Our sanctioned strength is 1,130 for 13 undergraduate programmes. We received nearly 7,000 applications,” said Ms. Sethurakayee.

She said there was a high demand for courses such as B.A. English, B.Com, B.Sc Computer Science and B.Sc Mathematics this year.

The college had received at least 1,000 applications for B.A. English, which had 120 seats, and 1,800 applications for B.Com, which had 120 seats.

“We have got 900 applications for B.Sc Computer Science, which has only 50 seats, and 900 applications for B.Sc Mathematics, which has 120 seats,” Ms. Sethurakayee told The Hindu on Monday.

The number of applications received by the college this year was less compared to last year, she said, adding, “Government colleges have been established in several districts recently. So the number of students applying here has reduced.”

However, the Government Arts College in Melur had witnessed an increase in the number of applications this year, said M. Balasundaram, Principal of the college. The counselling for the college would commence on Thursday, and end on June 27, he noted.

“Last year, we received around 1,200 applications. This year, the number stood at 1,527,” he said. The maximum number of students had sought admission to B.Com, B.Sc Computer Science and B.Sc Mathematics programmes, he added.
