The Dindigul Corporation Council has agreed to take up the second phase of underground drainage project to cover rest of the wards. But the councillors appealed to the officials eliminate problems and struggles faced by the public during implementation of the first phase of the project while implementing the second phase.

The councillors also expressed concern over erratic distribution of drinking water to several wards.

These issues were highlighted at a special Corporation council meeting held here on Friday.

The councillors said that several roads were not re-laid and were full of bumps and potholes. The public had a tough time during execution of the first phase of underground drainage project. More over, the corporation has plans to go for second phase without completing the first phase. The Corporation should take steps to eliminate such hardships while implementing the second phase, they insisted.

Reacting to it, Mayor V. Marudha Raj said that work was at the finishing stage in the first phase and relaying the road was being undertaken on a war-footing. “We will complete the work within a short time.”

DMK Councillor S. Vijayakumar charged that drinking water supply was made to his ward once in 15 days.

The Corporation did not take any efforts to streamline drinking water supply. Mr. Marudha Raj said new pipelines were being replaced to improve supply. Already, Athoor dam was de-silted. Another mini dam near the main dam was under construction.

After completion of these works, residents would get water daily or once in two days.

Another DMK councillor Rajappa appealed not to revise taxes before providing all facilities to residents within the corporation limit. Now, the officials pressed the residents to pay revised tax for repairing the existing water pipeline before providing these facilities. The Mayor also ruled out any tax revision.

Reacting to central bus stand expansion plan, Mr. Marudha Raj said that existing central bus stand would be beautified and new mofussil bus stand would be set up. “We have been trying to identify a suitable place for the new bus stand. The Dindigul will have two bus stands,” he added.

Several councillors appealed to pay attention to clear garbage on streets and transport them to garbage yard safely and to rectify technical snag in the touch screen in corporation office.
