The Madras High Court bench here has passed an interim order restraining the Madurai Corporation from reverting an accounts officer to the post of an accountant.
Justice T. Raja passed the order on a petition filed by P.S. Mani, the accounts officer, and ordered notice to the Madurai Corporation Commissioner.
In his petition, Mr. Mani claimed that he was recruited as an assistant by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department in 1998. However, he was appointed as the assistant only in 2000, he added.
The petitioner was subsequently promoted as an accountant and then as an accounts officer. According to Mr. Mani, the Madurai Corporation passed a resolution on September 4, 2009 to demote the petitioner as an accountant. The petitioner claimed that the resolution was passed on the grounds that the petitioner was promoted as the accounts officer considering his service from 1998, the year he was recruited, instead of 2000, the year he was appointed.
Mr. Mani contended in his petition that the impugned resolution was liable to be set aside because he has worked in the Corporation for 13 years. Even considering his appointment from 2000, he is the seniormost accounts officer in the Corporation, the petitioner claimed.
Justice Raja has adjourned the case by three weeks.
