: In an effort to provide a fillip to khadi and handloom clothes a khadi-fest show was held at the Tamukkam grounds here on Saturday. Khadi which is hand-woven and also hand-spun has now become chic with college goers and youngsters coming forward to buy more.

Speaking on the occasion, M.T. Wakode, Director, Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Madurai division said that khadi was not merely a cloth, but an ideology which had its origins in the pre-independence times; it has a very special significance in India's freedom movement and Gandhi gave great importance to khadi as a symbol of India's liberation.

Strongest democracy in the world

It was this weak cloth that had given the strongest democracy in the world.

Gandhi invoked khadi as a way of life to project his vision of individual self-sufficiency. Stating that even though there was huge production of khadi in Tamil Nadu the consumption rate was low, Mr.Wakode appealed to the audience to go for khadi as it would help the families of poor weavers to thrive.

Students from various colleges in the city participated in the show sporting beautifully designed handloom saris and modern stylistic khadi wear.

Specialities of khadi explained

The students each one of them explained about the specialities of khadi like it was very healthy for skin, providing comfort in summer as well as in winter.

They also asked the people to go for khadi products.

The event was organised by KVIC and The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association.
