The city police have registered a case of cheating against a head constable P. Sekar (45) attached to Tallakulam police station for allegedly cheating an aged man of Rs. 62,000.

The police said that Sekar got acquaintance with the complainant A. Jeganathan (64) of Chrompet, Chennai, through a woman police constable in Chennai. The retired technician from Chennai Harbour was looking for evidence to prove that his son-in-law, Balaji, had married another woman, even as the divorce case with his daughter was pending before a family court.

Sekar had promised that he would collect the second marriage certificate of Balaji along with the birth certificate of his child born through the second marriage.

However, he demanded Rs.one lakh for the same from Jeganathan, the police said, adding that Jeganathan had paid him Rs. 92,000 in three instalments.

Meanwhile, Sekar had failed to keep up his promise and returned Rs.30,000. However, he did not repay the balance money despite repeated pleas, the police said.

The case was registered following a direction from a judicial magistrate court.
