Chaturti rallies peaceful

Vinayaka Chaturti processions, taken out in many places in southern districts in the last three days ended peacefully, said Inspector General of Police-South Zone (in-charge) K.C. Mahali here on Friday.

The police had identified over 100 points as sensitive and deployed adequate personnel. All the Superintendents of Police and Deputy Inspectors General of Police in the south zone had taken precautionary measures well in advance.

The organisers belonging to various Hindu organisationss cooperated with the police thus ensuring peace during the rally. Minor skirmishes during the celebrations were tackled effectively by the local police with the coordination of revenue authorities, he said.

A large posse of police force was posted at the sensitive areas — Dindigul, Vedasandur, Palani, Madurai, Melur, Kottampatti, Tirupparankundram, Virudhunagar, Aruppukottai, Sivakasi, Tenkasi, Shencottah, Karaikudi, Ramanathapuram and Kayalpattinam in Tuticorin district. The idols, taken out on the permitted routes, were immersed at points designated by revenue officials.
