Census: enumeration work begins in city, suburbs

As part of the nationwide Census 2011 exercise, the enumeration work began in the city and suburbs on Tuesday.

The enumerators began the process by gathering details from the residence of Mayor G. Thenmozhi, Collector C. Kamaraj and Deputy Mayor P.M. Mannan, among others.

According to a Corporation press release, the enumeration exercise would continue till July 15. The enumerators had been trained on different aspects. A total of 2,500 enumerators with adequate number of supervising officers would be engaged in the census exercise in the Corporation limits. If needed, Corporation authorities would also assist them and zonal level officers (Assistant Commissioners) had been assigned with the task for this purpose, said Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine.

The residents shall furnish details such as name of the head of family, number of male/female members at home, details of drinking water facility/source, toilet facility, ownership of vehicle (two-wheeler/four-wheeler), television, radio, mobile phone, computer, among others.

At the inaugural census exercise carried out at the Mayor and Deputy Mayor's residences, officials, including Deputy Commissioner K. Tharparaj, Assistant Commissioners A. Devadoss, R.J.A. Raveendran, Public Relations Officer R. Baskaran, Chief Educational Officer N. Ammaiyappan, among others, participated, a release said.

Meanwhile, another press release stated that another batch of enumerators began the census exercise from the residence of Collector. After providing relevant details to the enumerators, Mr. Kamaraj told reporters that people should cooperate in the exercise as it would facilitate in arriving at accurate details need for planning.

A total of 5,581 personnel are involved in the enumeration exercise in the district. The Collector said that he would also be reviewing the progress with his officials at regular intervals.
