Call to end use of money power

May 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - MADURAI:

The People’s Anticorruption Movement has appealed to the Election Commission of India and Union government to bring suitable amendments to existing laws to eliminate the use of money, political and muscle power in elections.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the executive committee meeting of the movement held here recently. The meeting, chaired by M. Amanullah, president, said that the Election Commission should ban people with criminal background and cases from contesting in elections. All election-related cases should be closed in a year.

The other resolutions, according to a press release, included enactment of Lok Ayukta Act in Tamil Nadu to eliminate corruption at all levels and removal of discretionary powers vested with officials to curtail high-level corruption.
