An unidentified gang broke into the house of Vilpatti Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society secretary Palanivel (48) at Paramasivan Nagar in Batlagundu near here and took away gold jewels and household items on Wednesday night.

The burglars struck at the house when Mr. Palanivel and his family members had gone out on some personal work. They took away three sovereigns of gold jewels, Rs. 3,000, an LED television set, a refrigerator and a moped, and transported them in a mini van.

When Mr. Palanivel returned home on Thursday morning, he found the jewels, cash, household items and the moped missing.

Fingerprint experts lifted samples from the house and a sniffer dog was pressed into service. Acting on a complaint filed by Mr. Palanivel, Batlagundu police are investigating.
