A six-year-old child from A. Vellalapatti in Melur block died of suspected dengue fever at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here on Thursday evening. Raja Pandi, who was having fever for the past few days, was admitted in the morning and died at around 7.30 p.m.
Hospital authorities said that the case was referred as ‘queried dengue’ indicating that medical tests need to be done to confirm whether it was dengue positive. Blood samples were taken and sent to the microbiology department of Madurai Medical College for tests. “This child died despite treatment and Melur has become a major threat for dengue fever outbreak. The Collector was informed about the death and follow up measures have been initiated in the area,” a health official said. The boy was initially treated at Melur Government Hospital for two days and referred to the GRH as his health condition did not improve.
“The boy had a shock in the evening and could not be revived despite all possible efforts. We have asked the health staff in Melur area to be on alert and keep us posted on all fever cases for observation,” an official said.
