“Grab all the opportunities that come your way. Choose a career in which you will not seek employment but provide employment to others,” Justice G.M. Akbar Ali, Madras High Court, said while delivering the 14 Graduation Day address at Sethu Institute of Technology (SIT) here on Sunday.

“Educating the youth is the ideal way to build a nation. Students should make their parents and educational institutions proud. They should aspire to do postgraduate studies and become teachers,” Justice Akbar Ali further said.

Expressing concern over the low literacy rate in India, the judge said, “According to 2011 census report, only 74 per cent of Indians are literate. For the largest democracy in the world, this does not augur well.”

K. Muthuchelian, Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University, Salem, who was the guest of honour, said that dependency on technology has increased in the recent years. “Science- based education plays a major role in the development of a nation. We need to do a lot of research in generation of alternative energy,” he told the students.

Dr. Muthuchelian further said that engineering graduates from India were in demand all over the world for research-oriented projects.

Perumal Samy, Vice-Chancellor of Noorul Islam University, Thuckalay, in his presidential address said, “Learning is a continuous process. The actual learning for students begins only after they get their degrees. Students should be simple and humble but also able to make knowledgeable decisions,” he said.

Totally 715 students from various streams for the academic year 2011-2012 received their degrees on the occasion.

A. Senthil Kumar, Principal, said that 67 students had secured various ranks in Anna University.

The college gave a cash prize of Rs. 1.60 lakh to B. Bala Diviya, Rs. 1.50 lakh to G. Salomi Sudha, Rs. 90,000 to T. Hinduja and P. Asrin Banu, the university rank holders. S. Mohamed Jaleel, founder and chairman of SIT, was among those who participated.
